Meet Munisa: Healing Trauma with Compassion and Care

Munisa’s path to counseling has been shaped by curiosity, compassion, and a deep respect for people’s stories. Her path all started while volunteering at a refugee camp in Italy, where she met individuals who didn’t speak English or Italian but happened to share a language with her. Many hadn’t been able to communicate with anyone who understood them for years. “People just started opening up to me,” says Munisa. “It was incredible to see how much relief can come from simply being heard.” That experience sparked her desire to help others find healing through connection.

After beginning her graduate studies in Clinical Psychology at the University of Nairobi in Kenya, Munisa returned to the U.S. to complete her degree at Towson University. Her international background gives her a global, culturally-informed perspective, which is something she brings to every session.

There’s something powerful about helping people honor both where they come from and who they’re becoming.

Grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Munisa also integrates Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) when working with trauma and PTSD. Her approach empowers clients to understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors while feeling supported every step of the way. “I want clients to leave sessions feeling seen and heard,” she says. “We may not cover everything in one session, and that’s okay. What matters is creating a space where they feel safe to return.”

Outside of her clinical work, Munisa volunteers with the Intercultural Counseling Connection, providing pro bono therapy for refugees and asylum seekers navigating major life transitions. When she’s not seeing clients, you can find Munisa tending to her garden.
